As someone who grew up in Mass the state where the asylum is supposed to be located I found the Mass accent the actors were using completely wrong and irrating. Jessica Lang obviously studied Kathy Bates Maine accent used in Dolores Claiborne and thought a Down East Maine accent could pass for a Mass accent. They are completely different. In fact there are 4 distinct accents in Mass and the show got none of them right. A general Boston Mass accent that emphasizes the heavy Rs and hard As. A South Boston Southie accent best captured in the movie Good Will Hunting. The affected Brahman accent used only by male members of the Kennedy family. An authentic Brahman accent spoken by old monied families from Beacon Hill and the Back Bay. Today this accent is virtually extinct, but it would been encountered in the 1. I like the characters quite a bit. The asylum is creepy, especially the spiral staircase and the foyer. But the editing and story was jumpier than the first episode last year. I have a feeling this will not be a ghost story this time around, but some other kind of horror. Hopefully not aliens. Or monster plants. Or monster alien plants. Anonymousreply 4.
